About the event

During the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, stalls fill the area around Bang Neow Shrine with meat-free food: vegetarian suki, vegetarian fish-maw soup, fried noodles, spicy instant noodles, yakisoba, fried tofu and a big pizza sold by the slice or the tray. Fried snacks and cold drinks round it out. In the evening the street is crowded and lit up, with the food set against the faith of the festival's fasting tradition, and it suits both people who keep the fast and anyone just looking for good things to eat.

From the editors

Bang Neow Shrine is an active Chinese Taoist shrine on Phuket Road in Phuket Town, founded in 1904 and one of the busiest participants in the festival. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a nine-day Chinese Taoist observance built around fasting, street processions and rituals.
