At Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng, Phuket residents cover the sacred Go Teng pole with gold leaf. One of the festival’s main symbols, it marks the start of the festivities when raised at Chinese shrines across the island; it is believed to invite the deities down to earth.

Jui Tui Shrine is a prominent Chinese Taoist temple in Phuket Town and a central site for the Vegetarian Festival. The Vegetarian Festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration honouring the Nine Emperor Gods.
