About the event

In the morning, the deities of Guan Yu Shrine (Ban Nabon) are carried in palanquins with their ma song around Pa Lai community, going from house to house to bless the families who have set up altars with offerings at their gates. It is the neighbourly, smaller side of the festival next to the big processions through town. Come in white and keep to the edge of the road; the time follows TAT's schedule and may shift.

From the editors

Guan Yu Shrine in Ban Nabon is about a hundred years old; legend says it began with a Chinese sailor who arrived with a statue of Guan Yu. The present building opened in 2013. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Jia Chai) is the nine-day Taoist festival of the Nine Emperor Gods: those who keep it dress in white, give up meat and hold vows of purification, while 39 shrines across the island hold their own rites. A village procession is the smaller form of the street procession: through the ma song, mediums in trance, the gods visit the shrine's own community and bless its homes.
