About the event
On the festival's last evening the Jade Emperor and the Nine Emperor Gods are bidden farewell, and at midnight the gods — Kiu Ong — are sent back to heaven at the ritual site at Saphan Hin. Phuket Town's streets fill with people; TAT's tip is to watch from Thalang Road, Phuket Road, the Surin Circle clock tower and the road to Saphan Hin. The viewing route is on TAT's map in the cover; bring earplugs and closed shoes.
From the editors
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Jia Chai) is the nine-day Taoist festival of the Nine Emperor Gods: those who keep it dress in white, give up meat and hold vows of purification, while 39 shrines across the island hold their own rites. The send-off is the climax of the nine days and one of the loudest nights of Phuket's year: the shrines' processions converge on Saphan Hin amid non-stop firecrackers.
